He wrote this song in 1969 after having read the book Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. (It was made into an Academy Award-winning movie called Charly starring Cliff Robertson in 1968.) Originally, the song title was “Flowers for Algernon” but, since it’s a love song, he could hardly sing it that way. When he couldn’t think of name that rhymed with Algernon, he made up the name Melisson. Even though it’s a love song, Algernon in the book was actually a mouse.
